What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Are you always feeling tired and run down? Do you have dark circles under your eyes? Do you feel that you need caffeine and sugar to get through the day? Are you under frequent mental or physical stress? Do you have difficulties dealing with stress? Do you have a decreased sex drive? Are you frequently depressed or angry? Do you engage in frequent extreme exercise? Do you often have an upset stomach? Do you overeat and/or have experienced significant weight gain? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you may be fatiguing your adrenals and producing an excess amount of cortisol.

Adrenal fatigue is a collective term for a series of various conditions that affect the regular functioning of our adrenal glands. Usually linked with stress and anxiety, adrenal fatigue, unlike normal stressful feelings, doesn't subside easily through rest and relaxation.

Adrenal fatigue is a syndrome which can either be a sign of an underlying illness, or a result of a current condition a person is suffering. Adrenal fatigue syndome usually arises in respiratory problems such as pneumonia, bronchitis or influenza, as well as other chronic infections. There are also times when adrenal fatigue takes place when a person is about to suffer from anxiety or panic attacks and other emotional disorders. If you feel that you have any of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue, you should consult with a qualified medical practitioner prior to commencing any treatment or programs.

Our adrenals are vital in the regulation of stress and our metabolisms. A pair of endocrine glands that sit on top of our kidneys, they regulate stress and control our bodys' energy output together with the thyroid. Not only do they product the hormone adrenaline, which is critical in providing us with energy to undertake tasks feeling energetic and enthusiastic and not tired, our adrenals also product over 50 other hormones and neurotransmitters, including DHEA and cortisol. Our adrenal glands also govern our bodys' sodium-potassium balance, which is needed for the production of cellular energy. Additionally, the adrenals create the fight-or-flight response in us when we are faced with immediate danger or stress.

Certain substances, in addition to stress, may also trigger adrenal fatigue. These substances include stimulants such as caffeine and steriods.

Aside from bouts of restlessness, persons with adrenal fatigue generally feel unwell, disoriented, melancholy and sometimes depressed. Frequently our body beings to regain its glow and we get back our normal cheery dispositions after a good night's sleep. However, for persons suffering from adrenal fatigue, the blue, melancholic and unwell state continues to linger for many more days.

Adrenal fatigue may result in further health problems if left unattended. When our adrenal glands face fatigue they begin to work slowly and, in turn, we begin to feel weak and tire easily. A person suffering from adrenal fatigue may not be able to sit up straight due to a lack of adequate strength and would rather stay in bed, not only for hours, but for days on end. Our bodys' organs also lose their power as the fatigue takes place, as they receive their energy to function normally from our adrenals and the adrenaline and other hormones emitted.

It has also been noted that adrenal fatigue affects a person's behavior. Among the physchological changes the syndrome may contribute to include fast-changing moods, poor sleeping habits as well as a reduced sex drive. The body's metabolic rate is also reduced significantly, thus making a person more susceptible to gaining weight and even obesity. As a result, the person's fluid, electrolytes, blood sugar and fat levels drop quickly, causing significant weakness in the person. Also, poor cardiovascular activity would be noticed in persons suffering from adrenal fatigue.

Known by many names thoughout history, adrenal fatigue has also been referred to as: sub-clinical hypoadrenia; non-Addison's hypoadrenia; adrenal apathy; and, neurasthenia.

Keeping our adrenals nourished is important in the fight against adrenal fatigue. Overworking them through stress, caffeine, lack of sleep, alcohol or extreme exercise, to name but a few causes, results in excess cortisol production and insufficient DHEA production in our bodies. In addition to the effects of overwork, from the time we turn 25 years old, our bodys' DHEA levels begin to decline, while cortisol remains constant or may even increase. Cummulatively, this is negative for our metabolisms, which is determined by the DHEA/cortisol balance. As our metabolism slows down, cellular waste and toxins accumulate, ultimately damaging our health.

Excess cortisol puts the body in a catabolic state and leads to weight gain, muscle loss, the accumulation of calcium plaque in the arteries and even brain damage and memory loss. Cortisol also increases blood pressure, blood sugar, and weakens the immune system response.

Low DHEA levels have been associated with a spectrum of age-related diseases. Increasing DHEA allows Melatonin, Growth Hormone and IGF-1 levels to increase, all substances that promote a growth- inducing and healing anabolic state in the body. DHEA is also an anti-inflammatory hormone. Fighting chronic inflammation is especially important due to its high correlation with age-related disease.

Adrenal Re-Boot also promotes a healthy inflammatory response. Addressing chronic inflammation is crucial in the fight against aging.

As we age, our bodies descend into an increasingly catabolic state, which essentially means that tissues and muscle are breaking down instead of building up and growing, your body can no longer heal itself. By promoting an anabolic state, Adrenal Re-Boot helps muscle regeneration and growth. ReBoot your adrenals, revitalize your body, boost your performance!
